 "Punany" is an Afro-Caribbean euphemism for vagina, literally translating as "beautiful flower." Like coochie, kitty cat, and nana it is a popular referent used by many throughout the African Diaspora to describe the female pleasure giving/seeking genitalia. The Punany Poets are predominately African American, female, both lesbian and heterosexual, with one or two consistent male performers. Their poetry is romantic, erotic, revolutionary, political, and controversial, but first and foremost buttressed by poetry, song and dance it reflects the narratives of black people living, loving, making love, and fucking in the United States of America."

"In 1995 HIV/AIDS was no new to African American communities. African Americans have been disproportionately infected and affected by HIV/AIDS since the onslaught of the epidemic in 19--. The construction of HIV/AIDS as a gay white mans disease however, allowed it to fly under the radar of black politics, in spite of the havoc it was wreaking on black gay men, their male and female partners, and economically disenfranchised black communities.
